The main measureaments in centimetres are:

Waist size 67 cm
Bust size 88 cm
High hip 84 cm.

Our corsets are made to gently squeeze the waist by 2 to 4 cm from the actual “relaxed” waist measurement. Our Collection Corsets are tailored for a “relaxed” waist size of  70 cm, but the corset will actually embrace  your waist from 66 to 68 cm, thanks to an internal adjustable belt, which will help you to close the Corset at your comfortable measurement.

The Obi used for the main fabric of this Corset is a heavily embroidered brocade silk, carefully woven on both sides.

Obis can be made from any fabric strong enough to be pulled, but most of them, especially historic ones, are made from silk thread twisted together to create an unending variety of innumerable symbols, motifs and patterns. Some pieces may contain small imperfections, which is to be expected given the age of these fabrics. If there is a significant imperfection, it would be mentioned in the listing.

The Corset is finished with a soft lavender lining 100% silk.

Ancient Obis are really difficult to find, because they rarely survive as the strain from tying them weakens the fabric, making them more vulnerable to damage.  Therefore, as in Japan, we should treat this truly delicate fabric with respect and care, in particularly avoiding any contact with water and other liquids, and we suggest to consult professional dry cleaners if required.

After your purchase we encourage you to store your Corset in a cool and dry place.  The Corset will arrive in a box with a pillow and a dust bag where you can preserve it. It is possible also, either to place it protected in its dust bag in your drawers or, if you prefer, to hang it through its  loops in your wardrobe.

About this Corset

Enchanting Elegance: The Nara Showa Era Vintage Obi Corset

This Corset is a unique piece made from a vintage Obi coming from the ancient Japanese capital of Nara, from the Showa Era.

An Obi is a sash or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress.

The motif consists of groups of Peonies and Chrysanthemum embroidered on a dense gold circular shape, called Hana-no-maru – circle of flowers.

In the background, steady and tall bamboo are in the shade of Light Green becoming Yellow and then Gold. Interestingly, the metal Gold shades into green when mixed with Silver, creating a Green Gold alloy.

Those colours represent the different stages of a bamboo’s life.

The forests that surround Nara are filled with bamboo. One of the most impressive things about bamboo is how they sway with even the slightest breeze.

This gentle swaying movement with the wind is considered a symbol of Humility in Japan. Their tough and deeply rooted bodies make them resistant to the wind or the snow, and this symbolises the spirit to Resist to the adversity. The colourful Peonies represent Prosperity, Good Luck and Honour, while the Chrysanthemum, as the Imperial Family Emblem, symbolises Royalty.
