Spangold Fans and Flowers Fukuro Corset
£2310
Corset made from a black and gold silk Fukuro Obi. This Obi dates back to the beginning of the Showa Era (1926-1989) and represents a Golden Fans with Chrysanthemum and Peonies richly embroidered with both shiny and matte threads.
All the Collection Corsets are size UK 8 (EU40).
However, the fit can be slightly different depending on the thickness of the specific Obi used.
The main measureaments in centimetres are:
Waist size 67 cm
Bust size 88 cm
High hip 84 cm.
Our corsets are made to gently squeeze the waist by 2 to 4 cm from the actual “relaxed” waist measurement. Our Collection Corsets are tailored for a “relaxed” waist size of 70 cm, but the corset will actually embrace your waist from 66 to 68 cm, thanks to an internal adjustable belt, which will help you to close the Corset at your comfortable measurement.
The Obi used for the main fabric of this Corset is a heavily embroidered brocade silk, carefully woven on both sides.
Obis can be made from any fabric strong enough to be pulled, but most of them, especially historic ones, are made from silk thread twisted together to create an unending variety of innumerable symbols, motifs and patterns. Some pieces may contain small imperfections, which is to be expected given the age of these fabrics. If there is a significant imperfection, it would be mentioned in the listing.
The Corset is finished with a soft lavender lining 100% silk.
Ancient Obis are really difficult to find, because they rarely survive as the strain from tying them weakens the fabric, making them more vulnerable to damage. Therefore, as in Japan, we should treat this truly delicate fabric with respect and care, in particularly avoiding any contact with water and other liquids, and we suggest to consult professional dry cleaners if required.

About this Corset
Radiant Elegance: Showa Era Fukuro Obi Corset with Golden Fans
This Corset is a unique piece made from a Japanese vintage Obi coming from Kyoto, from the Showa Era.
An Obi is a sash or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress.
It shows Golden Fans with Chrysanthemum and Peonies richly embroidered with both shiny and matte threads. The feature recalls the characteristics of the Pure Gold has when mixed with other metals. It can be treated with heat until the surface corrugates and deforms. The reflection of the light produces a pleasing
aesthetic peculiar to the Spangold alloys.
In the past, in Japan, Fans were believed to keep away evil spirits, while also being used through specific gestures to silently communicate in public. They always play a fascinating role in the elegant traditional circular dance in a woman’s hand, and in Kabuki theatre are used to accentuate actors’ movements. In the Japanese imagery, a Fan is a symbol of Life as it spreads out when opened. The shape itself is considered a representation of many possible paths leading away from its beginning.
Gold Fans are thought to attract Wealth; therefore, they are a symbol of Prosperity.
The deconstruction of the pattern of the former Obi in the Corset aims to underline the aesthetic aspects of a facet surface.
