Golden Sea and Copper Waves Fukuro Corset

£2310

Corset made from a golden silk  Fukuro Obi.  This Obi dates back to the Showa Era (1926-1989) and it represents a subject dear to Japanese Culture: the vast and powerful Sea and its waves.

All the Collection Corsets are size UK 8 (EU40).
However, the fit can be slightly different depending on the thickness of the specific Obi used.

The main measureaments in centimetres are:

Waist size 67 cm
Bust size 88 cm
High hip 84 cm.

Our corsets are made to gently squeeze the waist by 2 to 4 cm from the actual “relaxed” waist measurement. Our Collection Corsets are tailored for a “relaxed” waist size of  70 cm, but the corset will actually embrace  your waist from 66 to 68 cm, thanks to an internal adjustable belt, which will help you to close the Corset at your comfortable measurement.

The Obi used for the main fabric of this Corset is a heavily embroidered brocade silk, carefully woven on both sides.

Obis can be made from any fabric strong enough to be pulled, but most of them, especially historic ones, are made from silk thread twisted together to create an unending variety of innumerable symbols, motifs and patterns. Some pieces may contain small imperfections, which is to be expected given the age of these fabrics. If there is a significant imperfection, it would be mentioned in the listing.

The Corset is finished with a soft delicate champagne lining 100% silk.

Ancient Obis are really difficult to find, because they rarely survive as the strain from tying them weakens the fabric, making them more vulnerable to damage.  Therefore, as in Japan, we should treat this truly delicate fabric with respect and care, in particularly avoiding any contact with water and other liquids, and we suggest to consult professional dry cleaners if required.

After your purchase we encourage you to store your Corset in a cool and dry place.  The Corset will arrive in a box with a pillow and a dust bag where you can preserve it. It is possible also, either to place it protected in its dust bag in your drawers or, if you prefer, to hang it through its  loops in your wardrobe.

About this Corset

Golden Waves of Elegance: The Showa Era Vintage Obi Corset

This Corset is a unique piece made from a Japanese vintage Obi coming from Hokkaido, from the Showa Era. An Obi is a sash or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress.

The embroidery is made of refined golden threads, which require expert craftsmanship. The detailed embroidery represents a subject dear to Japanese Culture: the vast and powerful Sea and its Waves. The rest of the Obi is plain Gold, used for the back panels of the Corset.

As the golden threads are strenuous to work with, Pure Gold is generally too soft to be used, therefore mixtures with other metals are indispensable.  When Gold meets Copper it creates the intense Red Gold, while adding some Silver it becomes the romantic Rose Gold.

The lustrous Gold Sea symbolises the sacred idea of the Sea that for centuries had protected Japan from invasions and brought food. However, the cresting foam of the furious waves in Red Gold reminds us of the powerful destructive force of nature. Some delicate Rose Gold waves can be spotted too, and they recall the constant movement of the water: sometimes calming and soothing, but also vigorous and powerful.

The deconstruction of the pattern of the former Obi in the Corset aims to celebrate the dynamism and unpredictability of life.
