Black Koetsu-Ji Temple Fukuro Corset
£2310
Corset made from a black and golden embroidered silk Maru Obi.
This Obi dates back to the Showa Era (1926-1989) and represents the Koetsu-Ji temple in Kyoto with golden Cypress trees and Pines.
All the Collection Corsets are size UK 8 (EU40).
However, the fit can be slightly different depending on the thickness of the specific Obi used.
The main measureaments in centimetres are:
Waist size 67 cm
Bust size 88 cm
High hip 84 cm.
Our corsets are made to gently squeeze the waist by 2 to 4 cm from the actual “relaxed” waist measurement. Our Collection Corsets are tailored for a “relaxed” waist size of 70 cm, but the corset will actually embrace your waist from 66 to 68 cm, thanks to an internal adjustable belt, which will help you to close the Corset at your comfortable measurement.
The Obi used for the main fabric of this Corset is a heavily embroidered brocade silk, carefully woven on both sides.
Obis can be made from any fabric strong enough to be pulled, but most of them, especially historic ones, are made from silk thread twisted together to create an unending variety of innumerable symbols, motifs and patterns. Some pieces may contain small imperfections, which is to be expected given the age of these fabrics. If there is a significant imperfection, it would be mentioned in the listing.
The Corset is finished with a soft black lining 100% silk.
Ancient Obis are really difficult to find, because they rarely survive as the strain from tying them weakens the fabric, making them more vulnerable to damage. Therefore, as in Japan, we should treat this truly delicate fabric with respect and care, in particularly avoiding any contact with water and other liquids, and we suggest to consult professional dry cleaners if required.

About this Corset
A Tale of Midnight Serenity in Koetsu's Kyoto Temple
This Corset is a unique piece made from a Japanese Obi
coming from Kyoto from the Showa Era.
An Obi is a sash or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress.
This particular one represents the Koetsu-ji temple in Kyoto at night, as unmistakably identified by the bamboo fence embroidered with golden threads on the black silky background.
The round fence was unique and quite modern for the time (1656).
The Koetsu-ji Temple and its seven teahouses used to be the residence of Koetsu Hon’Ami, the most sophisticated artisan in Kyoto in the 16th century. He established new forms of Japanese art which made their way into the lives of common citizens directly from the artist. Later, one of the movements he started became the Rinpa school of art.
Now Koetsu is recognised as the Father of the Rinpa School, one of
the major schools of Japanese painting.
