Golden Peonies and Flying Cranes Maru Corset

£2310

Corset made from a dark green and cream silk Vintage Maru Obi.

This Obi dates back to the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989) and represents a floral pattern with Peonies, Prune blossoms, Chrysanthemums, Pines and dancing Cranes.

All the Collection Corsets are size UK 8 (EU40).
However, the fit can be slightly different depending on the thickness of the specific Obi used.

The main measureaments in centimetres are:

Waist size 67 cm
Bust size 88 cm
High hip 84 cm.

Our corsets are made to gently squeeze the waist by 2 to 4 cm from the actual “relaxed” waist measurement. Our Collection Corsets are tailored for a “relaxed” waist size of  70 cm, but the corset will actually embrace  your waist from 66 to 68 cm, thanks to an internal adjustable belt, which will help you to close the Corset at your comfortable measurement.

The Obi used for the main fabric of this Corset is a heavily embroidered brocade silk, carefully woven on both sides.

Obis can be made from any fabric strong enough to be pulled, but most of them, especially historic ones, are made from silk thread twisted together to create an unending variety of innumerable symbols, motifs and patterns. Some pieces may contain small imperfections, which is to be expected given the age of these fabrics. If there is a significant imperfection, it would be mentioned in the listing.

The Corset is finished with a ivory lavender lining 100% silk.

Ancient Obis are really difficult to find, because they rarely survive as the strain from tying them weakens the fabric, making them more vulnerable to damage.  Therefore, as in Japan, we should treat this truly delicate fabric with respect and care, in particularly avoiding any contact with water and other liquids, and we suggest to consult professional dry cleaners if required.

After your purchase we encourage you to store your Corset in a cool and dry place.  The Corset will arrive in a box with a pillow and a dust bag where you can preserve it. It is possible also, either to place it protected in its dust bag in your drawers or, if you prefer, to hang it through its  loops in your wardrobe.

About this Corset

Golden Reverie: Showa Era Fukuro Obi Corset with Peonies, Apricot Blossoms, Pines, and Cranes

This Corset is a unique piece made from a Japanese Obi

coming from Hokkaido from the Showa Era.

An Obi is a sash or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress.

The main characters of this piece are the carefully light golden peonies, between them we discover delicate pink Apricot blossoms, rich green Pines and flying Cranes.

Throughout Asia, Crane is a symbol of happiness and eternal youth. In Japan especially, it is considered a holy creature and symbolises good fortune and longevity.

The evergreen Pine is universally known as the symbol of life. During the long and icy winter season in Hokkaido, the evergreen does not lose its leaves nor its lush dark green colour. In Japanese culture, the pine tree is known to represent steadfastness.

The Cherry blossoms symbolise new beginnings, renewal and beauty.

Peonies represent prosperity, good luck and honour.
