This Corset is a unique piece made from a Japanese vintage Obi coming from Kyoto, from the Showa Era (1926-1989).

An Obi is a sash, or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress.

The motif consists of three different patterns. Japanese patterns, called Wagara, date back more than a thousand years and are mainly inspired by nature. In the centre we find embroidered pearl pink hexagons interpreted as a reminiscence of the beehives and their sweet honey.

In Japan, the repetition of hexagons is considered an auspicious pattern. It evokes the upper part of the tortoise shell, symbolising Longevity and Good Fortune.

When the pattern has a small flower in the middle of the hexagon, it is known as Kikkō Hanabishi. The seashell repetition on the upper part and on the side of the corset symbolises Peace and Good Luck. The Arabesques on the lower part represent a plant endlessly growing and spreading in many different directions. This kind of pattern was introduced to Japan by China during the Nara period (710-794).

Although it originally was just decorative, the Japanese made it the symbol of Prosperity and Longevity and considered it as a Lucky Charm.
