Old Japanese “𝗼𝐛𝐮” – Japanese “𝗼𝐛𝐢” 

Japanese: from Old Japanese, ‘to wear’.

The only purpose was to keep the kimono wrapped in place and so to the obis were just braided cord to wear a kimono at the beginning.
