An Obi is a sash or a belt used to hold in place a kimono, a Japanese traditional dress. This Corset is a unique piece made from a Japanese Obi coming from Kyoto from the Showa Era.
In this piece is are the elegant white Herons flying over a irregular geometrical pattern and multicoloured garden of flowers, with beautiful small gold cherry blossoms and fans. Some touches of golden threads are added to the cream background, further enriching this splendid fabric.
Throughout Asia, the Heron is a symbol of happiness and eternal youth. In Japan especially, it is considered a holy creature and symbolises good fortune and longevity.
Historically, Japanese Hand Fans were tools of aristocrats and samurai class. They were a way to signify social standing, and even communicate messages. The Gold coloured fans are believed to attract wealth and prosperity.
The Chrysanthemum is a Japanese national symbol and it is celebrated the ‘Festival of Happiness’ every year in his honour. The yellow Chrysanthemum represents the sun and the light, auspicious of immortality.
